From the Round of 32 onward, World Cup 2026 knockout matches must produce a winner. If the score is level after 90 minutes, FIFA moves to extra time, then penalties if still tied.

Knockout Only

Group-stage matches can end in a draw. Single elimination from the Round of 32 on means no shared points — see knockout bracket.

Extra Time (ET)

  • Two halves of 15 minutes each (30 minutes total)
  • Short drinks break between the 15-minute periods (no full halftime)
  • Golden goal does not apply — play the full 30 minutes

If still level after extra time → penalty shootout.

Penalty Shootout

  • Five kicks per team in alternating order
  • If still tied → sudden death one kick each until one team leads
  • Only players on the pitch at the end of extra time (plus subs) are eligible — standard FIFA Laws
